FROST ON THE FAIRWAYS

Here is Frost on the Fairways, the photo that my wife nominated as theme for today. We left home this morning with only a fuzzy idea of where to go - East - but where? We had chosen the watch for the day - Mrs. C's beautiful little 17-jewel automatic day-date, just revived by yours truly. We turned onto the Admiral Baker Golf Course road, knowing we could probably walk around the valley.  A sign in the road sternly warned: "If you don't have a tee time, turn around here".  We turned into a parking lot at the driving range as instructed, and after pondering our options, left the truck. We set out on a convenient dirt road under a sliver of moon and a streak of vapor trail. The road took us a few hundred yards, then we diverted to the left at a trail sign. In the Boy Scouts of my youth, we walked on trails like this. No wheelchair access, no water faucets. Single file, Indian style, make no noise and leave no trace behind.  Of course we were not in total wilderness bec...

CHOLLAS LAKE IS FOR THE BIRDS

We expected fog in the morning, so we planned a trip inland about 6 miles from the bay. I was planning to stay clean and dry, so didn't need a tough watch.  Let me introduce the newest addition to the collection, which I couldn't resist yesterday when we went to the Seiko store. Yes, it's for my wife eventually, but the bracelet fits my 7 3/8" wrist and I kinda like the look of it. I made the right call to go inland. The sunrise was great again today. Chollas Reservoir used to be one of the main water storage facilities for the city. When I was a kid it was not open to the public. A shame, because we lived only a mile away. After other, larger reservoirs were built, they opened Chollas for shore use and as a kid's fishing lake. But I was already 30 then so couldn't fish :-(. This is a view looking west towards the dam; the rising sun behind me is lighting up the clouds. We walked to the west end; now you can see eastward. It's about 3/4 mile around the lake...
