TIME MARCHES ON, WITH SEIKOS

A few months ago we walked across the San Diego River / Mission Bay bridge. Today we walked across again, but on a new bridge, just opened for traffic in the past couple of days. Ignoring the different colors of the sky, you can see lots of difference in the pedestrian accomodations. Old bridge has a light every 100 yards, New bridge has a light every 50 feet. Old bridge has galvanized steel railings. New bridge has a curb on the outer edge and sophisticated handrails.



These are better built than the average watch (a guess) with stainless bolts, allen-head hex fasteners, recessed LED lighting in the uprights every 6 feet. There are custom cast markers saying this bridge belongs to San Diego. Hmm - is our city that rich? I don't think so ... why do we have endless potholes and homeless people on the street?



In the middle of the bridge they incorporated a bulge to allow birdspotting (my guess) or large crowds or fat people to pass each other. The wood panels are in places where the rail line shifts outward -- someone messed up or forgot that custom fabrication of those specific panels would be needed to align with the shift in the bridge's concrete walkway.

This lane for pedestrians and bicycles will be 12 feet wide, when the project is finished.

I'm wearing one of my top 3 favorite Seikos, an 8F56 Quartz Perpetual GMT titanium on bracelet that I have taken all around the world on my travels. It died about 6 months ago and it took an epic effort for me to bring it back to life - no spare parts available, and eBay "parts watch" priced around $300+. One identical to mine but with a cream dial is for sale at $800 from Japan. Hence my efforts, which finally succeeded.



We are having an extremely low tide right now, which is a boon to all the birds here. They are literally wading in food. The ducks are having to come up between bites for a breath of air.











Actually I am wearing two watches today, and the sun is warm enough to take off my sweater. Too bad we are looking at rain most of the rest of this week, says the weatherman.





Even the shore birds are relaxed about things today. I was 6 feet away for these photos.



A nice day and no, we just can't stop.

CHOLLAS LAKE IS FOR THE BIRDS

We expected fog in the morning, so we planned a trip inland about 6 miles from the bay. I was planning to stay clean and dry, so didn't need a tough watch.  Let me introduce the newest addition to the collection, which I couldn't resist yesterday when we went to the Seiko store. Yes, it's for my wife eventually, but the bracelet fits my 7 3/8" wrist and I kinda like the look of it. I made the right call to go inland. The sunrise was great again today. Chollas Reservoir used to be one of the main water storage facilities for the city. When I was a kid it was not open to the public. A shame, because we lived only a mile away. After other, larger reservoirs were built, they opened Chollas for shore use and as a kid's fishing lake. But I was already 30 then so couldn't fish :-(. STILL WALKING WITH MY WIFE

  "After seeing our owl outside my door this morning, I'm bored with this walking stuff," I heard myself saying. "Me too," she replied. "OK, let's go to Crown Point." "Great." And so we went, bored or not, and soon we weren't.  A lovely, but bug-eyed Opel GT stared at us across the intersection. We watched an off-road trash truck chase down some birds on the beach, as it went from can to can. That trash truck's tire tracks tempted the two of us, so we trod on them. Thursday morning 8 am in early February; who would be skiing? Apparently these people. We spotted some ducks - a couple hundred of them, all clustered together near the low tide line and one lonely shore bird. Perhaps hoping to keep us entertained, the ducks' leader decided to bring them all on-shore to forage in the grass. My wife watched with great amusement and affection. AN UPSCALE LOOK AT BALBOA PARK

  We are running out of Seikos, and today my wife is wearing her dressy, high-class Seiko -- and proving that men's Seikos don't get all the pretty blue dials.  BTW, that is NOT a tiny date window above 6 o'clock, it's the Seiko quartz symbol. We decided to go to Balboa Park today. Here's the approach to the iconic bridge across the Cabrillo Freeway. Balboa Park was originally called "City Park," but was renamed after Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, in honor of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, held in the Park that year.   Balboa Park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It is maintained by San Diego Parks & Recreation Dept. Our intention was to walk on sidewalks, concrete or asphalt, and not in the post-rainstorm mud. Little did we know how hard it had rained!
